Cladding Technology
Cladding technology creates a permanent and homogeneous metallurgical bond between two different metals through a combination of pressure and controlled temperature.
The resulting wire can be drawn down to very small diameters without loss of cohesion or structural discontinuity, while maintaining high levels of conductivity and mechanical strength.
The results is a material with a stable metallurgical interface that combines the conductivity of copper with the mechanical properties and light weight of the base metal — a high-performance, long-lasting solution.
Technology that combines two metals into a single conductor, creating a stable and durable bond between the core and the copper cladding:
- Core A wire made of aluminum (for CCA) or steel (for CCS) forms the core of the bimetallic conductor.
- Copper Cladding A high-quality copper strip is concentrically wrapped around the core, creating a perfect metallurgical bond at the interface.
- Drawing The wire is drawn down to very fine diameters (down to 0.10 mm for CCA and 0.16 mm for CCS) while maintaining its mechanical properties.
- Optional Finishing CCA and CCS wires can subsequently be tin-plated or silver-plated for specific applications.
Why Cladding is superior to Plating
Plating is an electrochemical process that may present limitations in coating stability and uniformity. Cladding, on the other hand, provides a stronger and more reliable metallurgical bond, even after drawing.
